Just a reminder that I'll be having art club after school every Wednesday in my room, from 4:00 till 5:00pm. There is no cost to join. A chance to experiment with art materials and hang out with friends!

Optical Art!

Our first major project will revolve around optical art! We'll learn about famous British artist Bridget Riley and create our own optical art image using pen and ink.
Here's an example of her work:

According to Wikipedia:
Op art, also known as optical art, is a genre of visual art that makes use of optical illusions.
Op art works are abstract, with many of the better known pieces made in only black and white. When the viewer looks at them, the impression is given of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibration, patterns, or alternatively, of swelling or warping.

Class Procedures

Supplies: You are not required to bring anything to art class other than a pencil. If you want to bring your own watercolors, colored pencils, etc., I can provide you a safe place to store your materials.

Seating: You will be allowed to sit where you want for the first few days you’re in class. After that, I will create a seating chart, and you will be required to stay in that spot for the duration of the grading period. Seating charts are subject to change at my discretion.

Storing artwork: I have provided an organized place for you to keep your artwork while you work on it. It is your responsibility to keep track of your artwork while working on it. Turn in all work once it’s finished. The number one reason students get poor grades in art class is from not writing their name on their work and then it gets lost and then the student says "oh mr. yax, i can't find my artwork. i never write my name on my work and always leave it laying on the table after class and so it's all your fault for it getting lost because even though you have like, half the school coming into your room on a daily basis, you probably don't like me and threw away my artwork on purpose and life is unfair and oh why aren't you listening to me!!?"

Turning in Work: As soon as an art assignment is done, you should turn it in the mailbox. Make sure you have your name and class period written neatly on the back of your paper.

Lost Work: When I find artwork on the floor, or not in it’s proper place, I do one of two things. Sometimes I just throw it away (especially if there’s no name on it), or I put it in the lost and found box. Again, students are responsible for keeping up with your work.

Hall Passes: No students are allowed to go to the restroom during the first or last 10 minutes of class. One student is allowed out at a time. Hall passes should be for emergencies only.

Clean-up: Time will be given at the end of the period to clean up any mess you make. You will be held back from going to your next class if you leave a mess.

Class Rules:
Come to class on time and prepared for class.
Talk with the appropriate volume and language at appropriate times.
Respect school property and supplies.
Only Artwork is to be done during class time.
Follow district rules and guidelines.

p.s. ruining or wasting my class art supplies is my biggest pet peeve. i will have to suppress the urge to hot glue your hands to the tables if you break/throw art supplies. plus, you won't be touching any other class materials until you pay me back for ruined materials.

Welcome!
Hello parents and students! I'm looking forward to another fun year here at J.T. Moore. Below is my basic syllabus, describing the class and how I run things around here. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 292.8095 x1032 or email me at jeremy.yax@mnps.org

Schedule:
This year we will be having an A/B schedule. Here's my bell schedule:
8:55 - 9:50 -Planning
9:55 - 10:45 - 8th grade
10:50 - 11:40 - 7th grade
11:40 - 12:10 (my lunch duty)
12:15 - 12:55 (my lunch)
1:00 - 1:55 -6th grade
2:00 - 2:55 - 5th grade
3:00 - 3:55 - 5th grade
The A/B schedule doesn't shift or change if there is a holiday or snow day. Ex: September 7th is Labor Day, which would be a B-day. Tuesday the 8th would still be an A day.

Grade Policy:
My grade policy is pretty simple. 100% of the student's grade is earned during my class time. There's generally not any homework. 70% of the student's grade is earned with their daily grade, which basically means just showing up for class on time and getting artwork done! You could technically pass my class without having to turn anything in! (not that I recommend that)
The other 30% of a student's grade is turning in assignments (and the occassional quiz). Simple and done.

Make up work:
If a student misses class, they'll need to do a still life drawing to make up their daily grade. I will post a list of drawing guidelines soon! Make-up work needs to be turned in one week before the end of the grading period.

Grading Rubric:
How do I grade artwork? We'll discuss in class what I look for in regards to specific projects. The main categories I look at are:

Following instructions - (you can't get full credit if we're all drawing flowers and you're drawing flamingos)
Creativity - (did you just copy my example, or are you coming up with your own idea?)
Craftsmanship - (neatness counts! most assignments will not be jackson pollock splatterfests!)
